English as an Additional Language (EAL)
EAL activities
Ita Hennessy teaches English as an Additional Language (EAL) here at CBS Westland Row. Ita really enjoys working with such a culturally and linguistically diverse group of students.
The EAL department at the CBS Westland Row offers individual support to students in a variety of ways. On arrival all students are tested for their language level and in collaboration with management and teachers an individual plan is made for students who need support with English as an additional language.
The school acknowledges the importance of supporting students with specific skills such as basic literacy skills including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Digital literacy skills are encouraged to access the school curriculum and use information for effective communication. A key objective of EAL support is to assist students in the recognition and use of specific key words in different subjects that will establish access to the school curriculum.
All efforts are made to assess academic ability regardless of the student’s English language level. Extra support is offered to students during exams. Formative and summative assessments are carried out throughout the year to monitor students’ progress, which is shared with parents and guardians. A number of our students have successfully studied for and completed formal Cambridge English language exams. This opportunity to progress all English language skills promotes transformative and life-long learning. There is a strong emphasis on communicative practice in relation to English as an additional language in line with the school ethos whereby each member of the school community is highly valued and respected and encouraged to flourish. Communication skills in English are necessary for social integration; bonds with teachers and management, building friendships and status among peers and involvement in a wide range of extracurricular activities. All languages are encouraged and respected. All of the aforementioned ensure that diversity and inclusion are at the core of the educational journey for the children in the CBS Westland Row.
