Junior Cycle
The new Junior Cycle will feature newly developed subjects and short courses,a focus on literacy , numeracy and key skills and a new approach of assessment and reporting. Students follow a set curriculum which leads to a junior cert at the end of three years. Students are encouraged to achieve their best and take as many higher level subjects as is appropriate.

The Junior Certificate School Programme is a national programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Skills and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. It originated in the early school leavers’ programmes initiated by the Curriculum Development unit. Currently the programme is operating in over 240 schools throughout the country.
Transition Year Programme
The Transition year Programme is a unique one year programme that promotes the personal, Social, vocational and educational development of students. TY provides a bridge to enable students make the transition from the more dependent type learning associated with Junior Cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with Senior Cycle. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.
The Transition Year is an activity based self-directed programme, which entails learning both inside and outside the classroom. Students who are self-motivated, can work hard and adapt well to new learning experiences.
The Leaving Certificate Programme:
The Leaving Certificate programme offers students a broad and balanced education while allowing for some specialisation. The certificate is used for the purposes of selection into further education, employment, training and higher education.
The examination is the terminal examination of post-primary education. It is held at the end of the Senior Cycle in post-primary schools. The Senior Cycle caters for students in the 15 to 18 year old age group.
Leaving Certificate Applied
The Leaving Certificate Applied is a two year Leaving Certificate course available to students who wish to follow a practical programme with a strong practical and vocational emphasis. The fundamental goal of the Leaving Certificate applied is to prepare students for transition from the world of the school to that of adult and working life.
The Leaving Certificate Applied programme is different in a number of ways:
It is a practical programme which makes wide use of active and student centred learning methodologies.
It uses a unique system of assessment. The students’ work is assessed over the two years of the programme and they gain credit as they go along. Practicals , interviews and terminal written papers are among the different forms of assessment used. The students’ communication, problem solving and practical skills are also assessed.
